Wow, enjoy the drive and please let us know about your experience. I have been patiently waiting for the big moment and I wish RIVIAN a successful initial or first R1T and R1S production.
I received an e-mail from RIVIAN today saying: See you soon. Rivian is going to hold an event similar to the ones held in Denver, New York etc..for pre order holders in Seattle, San Francisco, and Atlanta. They will send us dates and how to RSVP soon. I will be attending the Seattle event. I heard a lot about the in person reviews so it is nice that I will have the opportunity to see the Truck myself and talk to the engineers. I will try to get answers for you.
I am committed to purchase the truck, I was ready a year ago to have a truck. I pre ordered mine (R1T) the day they announced both vehicles. I watched RJ delivering and believed that RIVIAN is going to make a very good product. I am just wanting little more communication on progress. I want to cheer RIVIAN up when I read good progress I guess.
So far I like what I see and have read about Rivian. They have made some good decisions certainly ranging from paying attention to what works and what doesn't from an EV market leader (Tesla) to partnering with a legacy auto manufacturer (Ford). As such I believe Rivian has positioned themselves for success, though without a doubt Rivian still has a long climb ahead of them. And to that point, they need to improve on engaging their current and potential customers, say, by communicating their progress (right now very sparse), laying out their purchase process, develop/release a smartphone app (e.g. Byton has one to keep customers up to date and engaged), etc. Otherwise, they run the risk of people going elsewhere for an EV SUV or pickup as the competition is heating up with more and more players joining in.
1. Test driving the vehicle for a week or 1000 miles when you take possession of it may work for some. Personally it does not for me. I would find it a complete waste of time if I end up deciding to not buy (for whatever reason) when I could have been using those 18 months or so to invest my time and money in another EV.
2. I would agree but unfortunately I don't see that happening until Rivian starts rolling off production vehicles. I doubt they would turn over a pre-production vehicle to them. So again, no benefit here for those who have pre-ordered. However, at a minimum I'm hoping Rivian delivers some pre-production vehicles to independent organizations for safety testing like the NHTSA and IIHS. I want to have fun with my Rivian, not die in it. ;-)
1. Test drive or like Tesla has done before is to have the vehicle for one week/1000 miles to test drive and decide to keep it or return it.
2. We need to see the vehicles tested by YouTube pros like TFLtrucks in Denver in order for us to have an idea.
3. We need information on how the process of ordering/financial commitments etc....
We know that RIVIAN is very busy preparing for the vehicles to be manufactured etc...It is not an easy task, in fact it is overwhelming for a start up company that has to do it all from scratch. I wish them success.
The last I read was about a month or so ago from a Rivian rep that we will be able to configure our EAV later in 2019. For me, the next obvious question is will there be any commitments, whether financial or otherwise, to configure our EAV? Does this process actual convert our pre-orders into orders?
Since there hasn't been any news about their Test Drive Tour program, it's not clear when, if at all, we will have the ability to sit in one of their EAVs, let alone test drive one, before we have to make any additional financial deposits or commitments. Personally, too big of purchase for me to commit any additional resources until I can test drive it. I really wish Rivian would provide a pre-order to your driveway type of road map, at least to their pre-order holders, on what we can expect during this purchase process. Even if it does not include dates (I totally understand they won't want to commit to dates yet) but at least lay out the steps, commitments, how/where will be take possession of our EAV, how will any defects found be handled, etc.
I'm sure in all due time this will be provided and I suspect/hope some this information starts to be provided sooner than later.

I will be doing my test drive and orientation in Wickenburg AZ late 2019 or early 2020. This is all I can disclose at this time.
